What are cookies?

In HTTP, cookies are small amounts of data sent by the WWW server to your browser, which will then store them in the user computer. At every subsequent visit to the website, the browser will send the data back to the server. Cookies are normally used to distinguish users, store user settings, etc., and simplify website use. They are stored on the client’s (user) computer as short text files. Cookies don’t present any danger to the computer as such. They do, however, play a role in protecting your privacy. The website you have visited can use cookies to store any information it has about the visitor, and can gradually find out more about their interests, but cookies can never be used to find out the visitors’ identities. The information from cookies can then be used even without the visitor’s knowledge to target advertisement, user behaviour statistics and the like. However, the same information can be gathered even without the use of cookies, so this use can’t be considered as particularly dangerous. From Wikipedia.
